Kitchen Safety
The kitchen is one of the most dangerous rooms in the home, and restricting access to children should be considered. Some key ideas to think about and safety products relevant to this area are listed below: - Consider restricting access to the kitchen altogether, using a gate. There are many different styles and sizes available.
- Do you have emergency contact phone numbers near your telephone? It is also a good idea to have your home address and the nearest cross street to your house on this list too, in case you are not the person calling for help.
- Secure all drawers/cupboards with locks and latches (to restrict access to knives, cleaning substances, medical supplies, matches, fire starters).
- Remove butcher’s block knife-stands from the bench.
- Remove all tablecloths and replace with place mats.
- Use the back burners of the stove, turning the handles to the side to leave saucepans out of a child’s reach or alternatively use a stove guard.
- Lock your refrigerator using a refrigerator lock/oven lock.
- Store plastic bags/recycling/garbage and newly purchased shopping out of reach of children.
- Cover all electrical outlets with keyed outlet plugs, safety power cover or power board safety cover.
- Attach a fire blanket in the kitchen within easy reach of the stove/oven area but not to close to your stove as this is where the fire is most likely to be located.
- Lock your oven with an oven lock.
- Make your stove top inaccessible with a stove guard.
- Consider placing and oven guard on the front of the oven.
- Lock microwave ovens, if accessible to children, with a microwave/oven lock.
- Cover stove/oven knobs with stove knob covers if easily accessible.
- Restrict access to all appliance cords.
- Remove all three-dimensional magnets from your refrigerator – if they fall off, any broken fragments are dangerous if swallowed.
- Consider using a compact and convenient Baby Chair harness if out of the home or travelling.
