Having been a Teacher/Director of a preschool for 13 years, I was always acutely aware of the safety of the children in my care, and the need to provide a safe environment for them. However, having my first child opened my eyes to the many dangers that children face in the home.
I found that even though I had a lot of knowledge and experience in childcare and a good insight into the mischief children can get themselves into, I had very little knowledge of the potential safety hazards that existed in my home or the products available to help secure my home and turn it into a safer place.
Through my initial shopping expedition for safety products, I soon realised there was no ‘one stop safety shop’ to meet all my needs and when I found the product I thought was right, I found that staff were not often fully aware of its use or purpose or more specifically, how it really worked.
I had to return numerous products and spent too much money before finally getting the right product. I then realised that there must be many other parents like me, who were left feeling overwhelmed by the task of creating a safe home environment for their children. This is what prompted me to start Goldilocks.
Since establishing Goldilocks I have also been blessed with twin girls and that has created a whole new set of challenges for me. I found what one twin did not think of getting into, the other did. However, I was always able to stay one step ahead of them as I had the right safety products and I was more capable of anticipating what they would get into.

Goldilocks was established in 2002, with a clear vision to “educating parents as to how they can protect their children from danger and avoid the potential hazards that may exist in the family home. If left unattended, these hazards can cause serious harm or even death to children.”
The statistics correlated by The Accident and Prevention Foundation of Australia-Kidsafe, reveals that “injury has now replaced disease as the biggest single cause of death to Australian children after their first birthday” That "Each Week in NSW as a result of these accidents, approximately 1,300 children will be treated in a hospital emergency department, with many more children being treated by General Practitioners. Of these children, an average of 350 children will be hospitalised, and tragically between 1 and 2 children will, unfortunately, die." Kidsafe recognised that up to 60% of accidents, which occur in the family home, may have been prevented simply by implementing known safety counter measures.
Therefore, the aim of Goldilocks is to provide parents with appropriate information to reduce the risk of avoidable injuries and deaths to children in the family home.
