Traffic Safety

Children do not have a natural instinct regarding roadway danger and it is critical that you hold onto them when crossing roads.

  • Children are not ready to be left alone in/around traffic until they are at least ten years old.
  • Always hold your child’s hand when moving on the street or walking in, or near, traffic. Consider using a safety harness or wrist buddy for added security when out and about as children can be unpredictable, especially near roads.
  • Make sure you set a good example around traffic (always cross at a crossing or traffic lights) – kids are always watching and learning from you.
  • Always cross the road at the pedestrian crossing.
  • Always wear your seat belt.
  • Teach your child from a young age to exit from the car through the left hand side door, or the "safety door" as it is often called, so as to not step out into oncoming traffic.
