Laundry Safety

The laundry is an area where dangerous chemicals are typically stored, and restricting access to children should be considered. Some key ideas to think about and safety products relevant to this area are listed below:

  • Where possible the laundry should be made totally inaccessible through the use of a gate, by locking the door or restricting access with door knob covers.

  • Secure all cupboards with locks and latches. Ensure all chemicals are stored out of reach.

  • Avoid ironing when small children are present. Around twenty children per year are admitted to the children’s hospital at Westmead for serious burns from hot irons.

  • Keep the lid secured on the nappy bucket.

  • Make the washing machine and dryer inaccessible.

  • Where possible, make the laundry inaccessible.
